Trauma and Growth

We live in a world of opposites.

For how can you know joy without understanding sorrow? As you travel life’s road, you’re greeted by eternal pairs. The glowing sun warms you. The iridescent moon cools you. From womb to tomb, your life oscillates eternally between opposites. The light inside the darkness

Trauma is similar, as intimate to living as the breath that fills your belly and migrates to your lungs before cascading back out your nose.

Trauma is the darkness inside the light of life. Through your traumas – both big and small – you come to stand naked before the soul of the world and the heart of life.

Trauma breaks you open to continual rebirth. It is likened to the hammer that makes the bell sound, the first breath of a newborn as it enters the atmosphere of life.

As Rumi once elegantly noted, “The wound is the place where the light enters you.”

Modern culture tends to focus on only one aspect of trauma – the darkness, the pain, the longing, the wretchedness of the tears. The tearing away of all that was before and the separation from all that would have come after if the traumatic event had never occurred.

But this is only one aspect of trauma.

And while it absolutely is an aspect deserving of deep acknowledgement, reverent witnessing, and gentle holding, it is but one half of living.

On the other side of this dark night of the soul, there is profound healing and transformation. Trauma breaks you open to life and allows the collective world of experience to wash over you, to drown you deep in the waters of inflicted change.

A horizon of hope

As psychotherapists, we have worked with individuals who have withstood profound trauma and others who have endured a lifetime of chronic micro-traumas.

For us, trauma is a living presence that finds everyone in one way or another. In each individual experience of trauma, we have witnessed a profound strength, a daring courageousness, and a sacred healing of the self.

Beyond the field of the traumatic experience lies the horizon of post-traumatic growth.

Like the warmth of the rising sun after the long lunar-less night, you can find your horizon of being transformed.  Your life traumas may first appear as demons haunting you; yet, if we invite them in and work with them in a spacious, accepting environment where we feel safe, held, and heard, you come to find these seeming demons are really angels trying to set you free.

Pushing you to a rebirth of wonder and deeper truths to life, living, and a belonging to humanity. They season you as only they can and bring out those aspects of yourself that profoundly KNOW.

Standing in that knowing, you can then integrate the lessons you’ve learned, the growth you’ve expanded into, toward a new way of being in the world. You’ll feel more empowered to craft your life’s direction, more in charge of manifesting your hearts’ desires, stepping into your life purpose with courage and confidence. You’ll feel more whole.
